I've also tried a Yongnuo YN-560EX manual flash, and it works as long as I don't use the locking pin of the 560EX (otherwise, its center pin doesn't make contact). If I were to build a flash system now, I would probably use either Paul Buff strobes, or for something more portable, a Cactus V6 (paired with old Nikon D-TTL flashes, which are powerful but cheap, and do work with the Cactus v6). For example, maybe something is moving in front of your subject, like people or blowing leaves or confetti, and you don’t want the camera to switch focus to these things.
