Voyage dans la Lune, Le/A Trip to the Moon (France, 1902), the screen's first science fiction story, was a 14 minute masterpiece (nearly one reel in length (about 825 feet)), created by imaginative French director and master magician Georges Melies (1861-1938) in his version of the Jules Verne story. But, in a seeming short space of time, man had enabled huge strides in technology which enabled the seemingly impossible to become reality. In that time, it has accomplished a number of things including creating the first privately developed liquid-fueled launch vehicle to go into orbit – the Falcon 1. Four months after the first humans reached the moon, Apollo 12 touched down, achieving a much more precise landing on the moon. Then, every day after school, he made a jourey to the moon. During the moon landings, there were civil rights protests, protests who argued that the billions spent on the space programme, could have been better spent dealing with problems closer to home.
